Photobooths Are a Wedding Hit

By Jay Berk

You've probably seen a photobooth at one of the last weddings you attended. A classic photobooth can deliver fun memories for the bride and groom and their guests. Booths can work in a variety of wedding settings from classy to casual. Consider the following when deciding on a booth for your wedding.

A photobooth works pretty simply. Your guest (or you!) sit on a bench or in front of a background. The camera snaps a few pictures of you. Maybe you're serious or maybe you're making silly faces or even trying to tell a story in four frames or less. Then the printer kicks into action, delivery your accomplishments on a beautiful color print.

Photobooth Printer

The technology boom has created many options for photobooths. The booth you book for your nuptials probably won't use old, smelly photo-chemicals to produce the pictures like the old arcade style booths. Expect a modern printer at the heart of your wedding photobooth.

Ink-jet printers are often the same models you'd find on your desk at home. The images produced by an ink-jet printer will look incredible on the day of the event. Unfortunately, few models of ink-jet printers can produce images that last. Many ink-jet photos may begin to fade in as little as half a year.

Dye sublimation printers are the same style printers you'd find at many stores that make digital prints. The process involves melting plastic onto the photo paper. Dye sublimation printers are more expensive, but they produce a longer-lasting print. Dye sublimation printers are recommended.

Photobooth Background

Most any photobooth company can create a custom background for your wedding. These custom backgrounds range from simple text (your names and the date) to designs that can incorporate your wedding colors and theme. If coordination is important, pick a photobooth where you have more options with the background.

Memories

Preserve your memories with a CD or DVD after the event. Most operators will provide one, typically for free. Some booths will make double prints of each photo strip, so you can keep one and the guest gets to keep one.

If you want to really capture some great memories, consider creating a scrap book memory book. Each guest sits in the booth and pastes one of their pictures onto a page in your memory book. They then add a personal note alongside the picture. Many photo booth operators offer this as an option, or you can do it yourself.

Props Make it Fun

Some photobooth companies will provide props like wigs, hats and fake mustaches for your wedding. While this may seem out of place at an elegant reception, props are a great ice breaker. They are especially useful in convincing people who hate having their picture taken to sit in the booth.

The Cost

This won't be inexpensive, but they may make a great investment. With a photo booth, you get to keep the photos. Prices range from $800 to $1200 for a four-hour reception. You can often save by having the photo booth close during dinner and during the first dance and toasts. Tipping is common, but not required. If you tip, $40-50 is a generous tip for most operators.

Add some magic at your wedding by booking a photobooth. Booths are fun for all of your guests, from your 4-year-old nephew to your 95-year-old great grandmother.
