The Worst Rings of all Time: Tungsten Carbide

By Chad Stevenson

Wedding rings are an important part of any marriage. While sorting out everything else that needs to be planned for a wedding at some point you're going to have to decide what kind of wedding rings will best suit you and your fiance. These days there are many couples who are skipping over the customary rings made of gold and silver and going for something more 21st century such as; tungsten carbide. Once you learn all the facts about tungsten however it is evident that it's the very worst choice to symbolize the bonds and vows of marriage.

Once you begin your research you might at first track down a few positive facts about tungsten carbide. The most exciting selling point about tungsten is how extremely hard it is said to be. This can actually be confirmed by the Mohs scale of hardness as tungsten carbide ranks at about 9. The irony of this though lies in the fact that tungsten's greatest weaknesses come from this very attribute.

The truth of the matter is that even though tungsten is extremely hard; that doesn't make it unbreakable. You very well might not get any scuff or scratches during the life of the ring but that's as far as it goes. Because tungsten carbide is so hard it means it's also brittle. Tungsten wedding bands aren't malleable like gold or silver so the only thing tungsten can do is break into pieces. Drop it on your kitchen floor tile or slammed in a car door and it will most likely break. In addition because it is so brittle tungsten rings also cannot be resized. That's a double whammy against the quality of tungsten rings.

One other way tungsten falls short of a high quality item is that it can even become harmful in an emergency. If you end up in an emergency room with a tungsten ring on a swelled finger it requires a special set of pliers to break off instead of sawing it off like you would do with gold or silver. The problem is that not every hospital or emergency room carries these special pliers so if you end up in the room ER you might have a very bad experience to say the least.

Before you settle on buying tungsten to represent and symbolized what marriage means to you and your spouse make sure you take a hard look at the facts. Gold and silver are both far better choices in a myriad of different ways. Don't be fooled by current day trends and styles or you might just end up with more than just broken vows.
