Engagement Ideas They Haven't Heard Yet: Make Your Extraordinary Moment Count

By Sophie Farber

For those in need of marriage proposal ideas, knowing the traditions of the potential bride's family can be a huge asset. As many women expect some ties in tradition for her proposal, that is a good place to start. If you already live with your partner, you can make use of marriage proposal ideas such as breakfast in bed with the ring being presented to her soon after she has woken up, or you can take her on a vacation and propose to her while you are touring together.

When you are considering marriage proposal ideas, there are a few things you definitely should not do. Among them are elaborate plans to hide out expensive rings. By risking the ring, you risk your marriage proposal turning sour on you. While embedding the ring on top of a cake or in her glass of white wine may seem clever at first, not only do you risk damaging the ring, it also runs chance of being swallowed. You should also try to avoid giving the ring to somebody else to give to her, as this lacks personal touch.

Marriage Proposal Idea # 2: Spell It Out. Spelling out the question is a cool idea. Some like to write letters to their girlfriends. But I think you can take the idea one step further. For example, you can create a banner to be attached to a plane that says, "Will you marry me?" You can also have your question spelled in a large field where your girlfriend can see it from a plane or helicopter. If your girlfriend is working in a tall building surrounded by other tall buildings, you can have people hold up letters of "will you marry me" stand by the windows of the building her office is nearest to. Just remember to include the name of the person you're asking to marry, or people might wonder for whom that message is for.

If you're not afraid to spill the beans, asking for a family member's or her friend's help when it comes to picking out a ring may help you get a better idea of what she'd like. Get the size right to show your loved one that you care enough to notice the small details. Some women are more picky about their rings than others, though, so don't be offended if your new fiancee would like to adjust the ring to better suit her tastes.

Tailor the presentation. Prepare a speech beforehand expressing how much your loved one means to you and bring up special moments in your lives or times you've triumphed through difficulties together. Present her first with an album of photos of you together as your Valentine's gift before bringing out the ring.
